The word flannel originally comes from the Celtic term "gwlan" (the term for wool at the time). The fabric became famous above all as typical workwear for Canadian lumberjacks; however, it has now spread to a much wider range of uses and is present in most homes in one form or another.

What properties does flannel have?

Flannel is a fabric mostly made of wool or cotton. After production, the material is roughened either on one or both sides, which gives it its special fullness. Despite this fullness, which has a warming effect, the fabric is relatively light; additionally absorbent and wrinkle-resistant, this material is particularly attractive for clothing production.

Longevity, dimensional stability and color fastness can also be expected from a high-quality flannel.

What can you sew from flannel?

The soft fabric is still a popular material for making warm shirts — but no longer limited to that. The bedding industry has also discovered that flannel fabrics make excellent duvet covers and sheets for the cold winter months. So why not sew pajamas out of the fluffy fabric right away?
